Grade 2* bridge repairs

The bRief

A rather unusual job from the norm, Somerset Stonemasons undertook the consolidation, repair and replacement of stone elements to a 19th Century bridge on a private estate near Wells, Somerset.

After years of neglect and poor repairs, the bridge required some attention. Rain runoff penetrated the road surface, seeping deep into the structure and raising concerns about the bridge's ongoing integrity.

consultation with somerset’s conservation team

The councils conservation team were involved in ensuring the repairs were carried out in a sympathetic manner in keeping with a grade 2* structure. Mortar analysis was carried out by the team at Rose of Jericho, Identifying what substrates and aggregates were used in the original build.

We matched the findings to local aggregates and pozzolans to recreate the original mortar.

stone replacement

Once the repointing and consolidation works were completed, the next task was to detail and fabricate the stones that needed replacing. In this image you can see new balustrades and plinth course produced at our workshop in the local Doulting stone.

The bridge is now ready to continue for the next 200 years in providing access over the river.
